New Month, New Things Coming!

I totally flaked out last week. No author blog posts, no school blog post — it was all blown to the four winds. I’m sorry about that. I don’t really have an excuse, either. But I’m happy to be back this week and excited to share some news which might encourage others to try something new in their own homeschool circles.

Home School Clubs

In most urban areas, it isn’t too hard to find a club or start a club that focuses on the interests of your students. But in rural areas, this can be quite the challenge.

I had hoped the home school group we joined last year would offer some activities we could possibly join in, but that didn’t really happen. Most of them were too far away and being a one-vehicle family and miles away from most of the participants, it wasn’t worth the dues we spent to join the group at the beginning of the year. The connections we made were minimal, too. It seemed as if since we were new and also not from the closest big towns, we weren’t worth their time. I got to know the main coordinator and that was pretty much it. Even the lady who invited us to join the group didn’t exactly visit much with me, though her daughter and mine are best friends. Talk about awkward!

So we didn’t join the group this year. And we were without group activities…until a friend of mine shared with me her search for activities for she and her daughter to participate in together. So we’re making a little group of our own. We’ll focus on skills which can help the girls take care of themselves once they are out on their own.

Basic sewing, cooking, and crafting skills are necessary to life, in my opinion. Not all of us can throw a shirt away if a button pops off. Or what if you’re out in public and your button pops off? It’ll pay to know how to manage a quick fix.

And what if an organization you support needs a crafty-minded person to speak up for a fund raiser or to create something for marketing? Those crafty skills will be just the thing.

And if you’re on your own for a long period of time, ramen noodles and microwave dinners just will not cut it for any length of time. Grilled cheese is even better than that! So knowing how to cook some simple, tasty meals always comes in handy.

What About You?

Have you started a club for your students? What was that like? Do you have any tips or knowledge to share? We’d love to hear about it in the comments.
